She Was The First
Her name means "life-giving" or "mother of all who have life". As we launch into the celebration of moms, it is only fitting to remember the first mom ever. Yes, we think of sin and it's far reaching consequence, the apple, the serpent, the deception and fall of man - all that happened in the garden that day. But just for a moment, remember Momma Eve.
So much could be written and has been. Even though her choice brought pain and agony, she was also given the promise of "you will bear children". Out of Eve, would come mankind.
She was the first MOM.
She was the first to carry a child in her womb. Did she even grasp what was taking place inside her?
She was the first ever to feel a life growing within her body. The first woman to outgrow her clothes..or animal skins.
She was the first to have cravings :) Did Adam have to run out to the local bush and grab her some strawberries in the middle of the night ?
She was the first to have questions....and I wonder, was God right there to answer them?
She was the first to have labor pains. The first to give birth....without Lamaze classes. What was Adam like during this time? Did he look into her eyes to calm her...did he sing softly to her?
She was the first to do the mommy thing without any books or another mom to bring encouragement and assure her she would live through this.
But Eve still knew that God was in control of her life. "With the HELP of the LORD, I have brought forth a man." Genesis 4:1
She was the first to nurse. How did that first snuggle and feed happen?
She was the first to discover she needed diapers....so literally she invented the diaper :)
She was the first to deal with sibling rivalry.
She was the first mom to lose a son. Both sons. The first mom to experience the pain and sorrow of her son's wrong choices.
Yet, she was also the first to experience God's promises....out of her pain and sorrow came Seth...out of Seth came Noah.
So many firsts.......
As I think about mothering and the years I have enjoyed this marvelous and incredible privilege, there were older moms who mentored me. There were women my age where we walked the journey together. We laughed, shared stories, sometimes cried...and always prayed for our children. We have had those who "have gone before us" to show us how to do this mommy thing. For me, as I am sure for many of you, the Word of God, His presence and His encouragement has been our sustaining strength and well of wisdom to draw from.
Honoring Eve....and the mothers who came after. Each day, hopefully, up to Mother's Day, I will post a story of a mom who has made a difference in our lives. Some will be the examples in Scripture, some will be stories you send in. Life can be noisy and very busy about now......especially if you are a "MOM" :) A story a day....a mom a day to honor....send me your story. Let's laugh, maybe cry, but always remember together.
Email me your stories to: DebbyJD@hotmail.com and put in subject line "MY MOM"
You can attach a photo if you would like :) This will be fun! And a unique way to celebrate your mom this year. Hurry though, ladies, we are on the countdown and there are only 11 days left before the big day! (If you need a refresher of why we are doing this, read the post before this one :)

A Mother's Day Blog-a-thon
One of my favorite holidays is just around the corner. Of course, I am a MOM! I love having my children pay attention to me :) I enjoy not having to cook (unless my own mother visits and then I want to spoil her with a lovely meal :) It is a time when a mom gets to enjoy being spoiled a bit! By the time Mother's Day rolls around, spring has shown her lovely face and we begin to enjoy a bit of warm weather here in our neck of the woods. And I am a big fan of "honoring" those who have not only given life, but have given so much of their lives and sacrificed to care for their families.
I especially am blessed by the many stories I hear of the way moms have touched a person's life. Special moments and memories etched in our minds and hearts for eternity. Some involve tremendous sacrifice, some as simple as a smile when needed. Other times, a mom was there with a crucial bit of insight at just the perfect time. And others, just the thought of a special meal or event....even a smell that invokes the feelings of never wanting to let go of that moment.
For the next three weeks, I would love to hear from YOU and your special MOM memories! I want to dedicate the days leading up to Mother's Day (May 12th) to remembering and honoring our moms. Actually, you might not even have a memory of your mother, but there has been a mom figure in your life and you would love to share a memory. If you would like to email me your stories (500 words or less), I will review them and then publish them here on the blog. You can give me your first name only (or not), and I will give you credit for your piece. I had a friend a few weeks ago send me the most amazing story of her mom who is no longer with us. That will be one of the first ones I share, along with my own "mom story". A new and creative way to honor your mom this Mother's Day. All it takes is a few moments of your time to put your heart on paper (or computer page :) and send it to me. I would love to hear, maybe shed a tear or two, and even laugh out loud as you remember your momma :)
Actually, when you email, you could attach a photo if you feel comfortable doing that also.
Email stories to DebbyJD@hotmail.com and put in subject line "MY MOM" . Ideally, I would like to post a story a day until Mom's Day, but it will take all of you sending me your memories to make this work.
So here we go...our very own Mother's Day Blog-a-Thon.... get those stories rolling in...

Valentine Days Gone By...

Ask my family...I love holidays and rarely does one go by without celebrating or at least decorating a room or two. Growing up as a young girl, my mom would give my brother, sister and I each one of those 99 cent boxes of chocolate and had them waiting for us at breakfast. This “tradition” carried over into my own family when I had children, although as they grew older, we graduated from small boxes to Toblerone or Lindt’s, and I added a candle burning with love by their breakfast plate. In my mind, you can never express love too much to those you hold dear to your heart.
I know memories of this day are not always pleasant for a lot of people...the pain of childhood when you didn't get a Valentine and everyone else did. Or you longed for a boyfriend when your friends all had one. Or there was pain surrounding the season you were in. But, as with any holiday, there are good memories to be remembered as well. And that is what I want to do today...remember good things. My first Valentine’s Day with my husband-to-be, an evening out with a box of chocolates and flowers. When our four children came along, red vinyl hearts were plastered on windows and the day was filled with baking heart-shaped cookies. I would cook a special dinner by candlelight which all 6 of us would enjoy around a large table filled with love. Red cardboard hearts dangled from the lights. Once or twice, we ended the meal with a heart-shaped cake covered in pink frosting and red sprinkles.
As the children grew and went out with friends, my husband and I would sneak away for a quiet romantic dinner. Once we actually remembered to make reservations well ahead of time! A new restaurant opened ON Valentine’s Day. It was packed, but we had reservations! Years ago when we were first married, visiting my husband’s family in Australia, we were walking through a mall on Valentine’s Day and saw red hearts in the window. We gasped, looked at each other and burst out laughing. We had both forgotten! And we’ve enjoyed Valentine’s Day dinner at church with other couples choosing to spend it with friends, laughing and sharing funny romance stories!
The last couple of years my husband has been involved in missions trips, teaching in Bible schools and I’ve found myself without my husband on Valentine’s Day. No pouting for me! I have enjoyed a candlelit fancy home-cooked meal which my youngest daughter and I prepared together. Just the two of us as we talked about relationships, romance and the right way to do this thing called marriage. Trust me, that Valentine’s dinner was priceless!
Fifty-seven years encompassing my childhood, 27 years of marriage and 26 years of children all celebrating a day where I get to pour love on those who are so important to me. Memories I wouldn’t trade for anything...not even chocolate :)
btw...for those who read the blog yesterday...yes, I am by myself for this Valentine's Day, BUT I did get taken out for a lovely breakfast and roses before he left! He is the best!
Happy Valentine's Day....today, show "someone" that you care about them!

Estate Sale Memories
Today I went to an estate sale with a good friend. I did the Estate Sale 101 talk as we walked room to room. Yes, this is more expensive...this sale is the result of someone passing away; their relatives hiring someone to organize, price and sell the accumulations from their loved ones' life. A percentage goes to the estate people and the rest to the deceased's family. It is a business. But a business that helps a grieving family when the process of going through all the "stuff" is just to much to handle.
Yes, that is ALOT to pay for that embroidered picture of a bird on the wall. I'm curious what they do with the stuff they don't sell? Anyone need a framed cross-stitched bird for their wall?
We ended up hitting the garage sales on the way home. A fifty-cent colander and 25-cent potato masher later, we were happy. And then we found the $2 cookbook, a $2 suitcase set and a $3 coat tree! We are more garage-sale people I discovered, and we planned to hit a few more tomorrow. She is moving soon and setting up "house".
I couldn't help but wonder as I walked through the estate sale..."this was someone's life...all this 'stuff' is from years and years of living." And there were years and years, let me tell you. What kind of life did they live? Obviously, she enjoyed cooking and baking by all the kitchen ware for sale. She must have loved to entertain with all the crystal glasses and serving dishes gracing the shelves. He or she loved birds and dogs. And did they celebrate Christmas!!
A person's life...possibly two persons' lives....laid out in the rooms of this house that was once a home. How many holidays were celebrated around that table? Were there shouts of joy when the children and subsequent grandchildren opened their presents surrounded by the lights and stuffed Santas?
Somehow leaving a sale like that one always leaves me a bit contemplative. I hope IF there is an estate sale following my life, people are blessed by what they find. (Actually I hope I give it all away before that time, I'd rather see it meet someone's need or want, rather than a sale...but I won't be around to consult, so that point is moot.) Years ago, my mom and dad began to give away some of their belongings to the children who would appreciate them...a punch bowl here, a set of glasses there....it meant something to have it gifted rather than left to sell. I guess my thought process here is....a person's life is more than what is "left behind" in terms of material possessions. As I left that house, I hoped their lives had been full with family, friends, and adventure. I hoped it had meaning and purpose. And the "stuff" left behind goes on to bless others and not just end up in a junk pile somewhere.
I picked up a rolling pin at a garage sale one time and the lady told me "Many many apple pies were made for my family with that rolling pin." I loved it! And I bought the rolling pin! Whenever I use it, I think of the many people blessed by her apple pies and now I do the same (hopefully.... my son likes his grandma's apple pie the best :) so with this pin, it is pecan).
Our lives are more than stuff...they are memories and passing those onto those we love, and sometimes to strangers. I have an ongoing appreciation for estate sales, but a love affair with garage sales...it is cheaper :)
